Panther Families,

WIth the 2019 varsity football season finally upon us I wanted to take a moment to thank our parents and players for all of your hard work this off-season. As we begin our fall training camp I wanted to try to answer some of the questions that some of you may have about camp. If you still have questions please send me an email at . All of the following information and schedules applies to varsity players (Grades 10-12) only. Ninth grade players will receive a separate schedule.

How do I find out practice times for this year’s camp?

You will find the fall training camp schedule on page 3 and 4 of this correspondence. All practice and report times are listed. You can also access the Coach’s Calendar on our booster site at www.uscfootballboosters.org. This is a live calendar, so any schedule changes will be reflected immediately.

Early morning practices:
There are many reasons why we are starting early in the morning this year. First, we want to make sure we are not putting the boys in the severe heat twice a day. By practicing early we limit our time in the hottest sun to once a day. The second reason is coach availability. To make sure we have our full staff we need to set these practice times for earlier as well as later in the day. Lastly, we want the boys to adjust to getting up early as this will be their routine in the fall. Some of our best practices were early in the morning this summer and this group seems to respond well to the early practice time.

Will the boys stay at school in-between practices this year?

No. Players will be released to go home after our first practice session this year. Because of the large time gap between the first and second practices we felt that the players will have better rest at home. Taking a nap in the locker room next to 50 other boys is not always a restful situation.

What about breakfast and lunch?

We will provide granola bars, protein bars, fruit, and drinks before and after the morning session. Because the boys will return home after the morning practice, they are to eat lunch on their own. Since the boys are eating lunch at home we have eliminated the lunch fee that was charged in previous years.

Am I allowed to watch practice?

With the stadium under construction it may be difficult to watch practice. We ask that if you do come to practice that you stay off the track and field during the workout.

What do I need to wash at home?

Practice jerseys and practice pants should be washed at home. Ideally they are to be washed multiple times during the week. To limit germs and bacteria in the locker room we will encourage the boys to take these items home frequently to be washed. Do not wash game jerseys at home. We contract a service that has specific guidelines and detergents that are designed to preserve our game jerseys and game pants for the long haul.

What if I have an issue and I need to talk to a coach?

My advice is to have your son talk to their position coach or me if an issue arises. We are trying to teach the boys how to communicate and solve their own problems. If, however, you feel that things have not been resolved then please do not hesitate to contact me directly. My cell phone is 412-916-0132. You can also email me at . I will get back to you the same day. Due to school and team policy, however, the only issues we are unable to discuss directly with a parent are those of position and playing time. This can be frustrating at times for you as a parent, but it is necessary so that all boys are treated fairly.

Does my son require a lock for his locker?

Yes. New this year I am requiring that all players lock their lockers. The boys don’t typically steal from each other, but history has taught us that they will “borrow” equipment if they can’t find their own. This has led to players not having their pads for practices and games. The boosters also purchased very nice new player stools that may disappear if not locked in their lockers.

My son has a doctor’s appointment during practice. What should I do?

Please avoid scheduling doctor’s appointments during football practice. Our success depends upon all of our players being available and engaged. Missing practice due to a doctor’s appointment is difficult on coaches and players. During the season it might be beneficial to find out your son’s free mods or lunch and schedule appointments during that time. I know this can be difficult, but missing a day of practice impacts the entire team. Please contact me directly if you have a scheduling conflict you can not resolve.

Can I come on the field and take pictures with my son on Picture Day?

YES! We would love to see your family on the field on picture day. Feel free to bring your camera and take as many pictures as you like. We will also be opening up the locker room on picture day for you to come and see some of the new changes we have made.

Final Thoughts

We have a great group of kids and our coaches are excited to start the season. Thank you for allowing my coaching staff to be a part of your son’s life. Our goal is to win football games and change lives in the process. Our focus is on making this year a special one that our boys will remember for the rest of their lives. You are a big part of that vision. Thank you for supporting our team and GO PANTHERS!!!
