With the 2019 freshman football quickly approaching I wanted to take a moment to thank our parents and players for all of your hard work this summer. As we begin our fall training camp I wanted to try to answer some of the questions that some of you may have about camp. If you still have questions please send me an email at gmathews@uscsd.k12.pa.us. All of the following information and schedules applies to freshman players.

How do I find out practice times for this year’s camp? You will find the fall training camp schedule on page 3 and 4 of this correspondence. All practice and report times are listed. You can also access the Coach’s Calendar on our booster site at www.uscfootballboosters.org. This is a live calendar, so any schedule changes will be reflected immediately. A modified freshman camp starts Monday August 5th and concludes Friday August 16th.  Due to the fact that a freshman team is considered a junior high the official start of camp in pads is  Aug 12th.

What if our family is on vacation during one of these two weeks? Some players have already contacted myself or Coach Junko about vacations that could not be moved and we are aware of those players that may miss days during camp. We understand the late addition of the ninth grade program made it difficult for families to change their vacation plans. In the coming years it will be helpful to avoid vacations deep into August. Please contact me at if you have not contacted either one of us about missing camp days.

Will there be two-a-day practices for the freshman? And where will they practice? As of now, we plan on holding one (possibly two) two-a-day practices for the entire camp.  This practice will focus on special teams. The information on when the possible two-a-day practices will be communicated to both players and parents and posted on the live calendar.  All practices will be held at the high school stadium field.

Will freshman share a locker room with the varsity team? No.  The freshman will have their own separate locker room located right next to the varsity locker room.

Does my son require a lock for his locker? Yes. New this year we are requiring that all players lock their lockers. The locker assigned to your son will be in an area that will be used by gym classes so we want to make sure their equipment is properly secured.  The typical masterlock should work fine for their locker.

What do I need to wash at home? Practice jerseys and practice pants should be washed at home. Ideally they are to be washed multiple times during the week. To limit germs and bacteria in the locker room we will encourage the boys to take these items home frequently to be washed. Do not wash game jerseys at home. We contract a service that has specific guidelines and detergents that are designed to preserve our game jerseys and game pants for the long haul.

Can my son participate in camp without his physical being completed? No.  New this year, the athletic department is not accepting any paperwork when it comes to physicals or checks.  Every athlete needs to submit and upload their physical to the FamilyID before competing. Coaches have the ability to view what is uploaded on the website.  Even if the athlete brings in the paperwork and proves the physical is completed, they cannot participate until it is uploaded on FamilyID. If you have any questions about familyID feel free to contact the athletic department secretary, Kimberly Valerano at

Will the freshman have to dress and be on the field for varsity and junior varsity scrimmages and games?  No.  It is encouraged that the freshman team attends as many varsity and junior varsity games as they can.  It is always beneficial to observe and learn from their varsity peers. It will also be encouraged that they all sit together and watch the games as a team, but the freshmen will not dress for any of these events.

What if I have an issue and I need to talk to a coach? Playing freshmen football serves as a great transition to the High School experience. The boys will play with their friends and get to experience the fun of football without the varsity time commitment. Issues may come up from time to time. Please do not hesitate to contact me directly if your son is having any issues on the team. We want this to be a positive experience for the boys and one that will have them excited about moving to the varsity level in the coming years.

My son has a doctor’s appointment during practice. What should I do? Please avoid as best you can scheduling doctor’s appointments during football practice. Our success depends upon all of our players being available and engaged. Missing practice due to a doctor’s appointment is difficult on coaches and players. During the season it might be beneficial to find out your son’s free mods or lunch and schedule appointments during that time. I know this can be difficult, but missing a day of practice impacts the entire team. Please contact me directly if you have a scheduling conflict you cannot resolve.

Can I come on the field and take pictures with my son on Picture Day? YES! We would love to see your family on the field on picture day. Feel free to bring your camera and take as many pictures as you like. We will also be opening up the locker room on picture day for you to come and see some of the new changes we have made.

Final Thoughts Our ninth grade staff is excited about this class and the coming season. We have a demanding schedule that will challenge the boys and help them to develop as football players and young men. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me directly. We look forward to having your family join the Panther Football Family for the next four years!
